Dahlia Seeds
Dahlia
Ready to grow your own dahlia magic? Dahlias grown from seed do not grow true to the mother plant—each seed produces a completely new dahlia. This is how dahlias are bred.
You may see a range of flower forms, including more open or open-centered blooms. This season, we organized our field by flower form and intentionally did not grow any open-centered dahlias, which should help reduce the number of open-centered flowers in this seed mix.
And yes—dahlias grown from seed produce tubers too! Growing dahlias from seed is part experiment, part surprise. Whether you’re hoping to breed your dream dahlia or you just love a little mystery in the garden, this mix is perfect for the adventurous gardener. 🌸
Details:
Plant type: annual
Height: 40-60”
Site: sun
Days to maturity: 90-120 days, depending on variety
Plant spacing: 9-12”
Pinch: not necessary
Approx seeds per packet: 30
How to Grow:
For transplanting (recommended): sow seeds 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Cover them with a growing medium and keep the soil surface moist until they sprout. Once the seedlings have true leaves, move them to larger cell packs. Ensure they don't become root bound and avoid disturbing the roots.
For direct seeding: not recommended.
Germination: 5-10 days at 65-70°F (18-21°C).
Where to plant:
Well draining, sunny spot.
Harvesting/Vase Life: Harvest before the flowers are fully open.
Dahlia flowers are not known for their long vase life. To increase their longevity, place the cut stems in 3 inches of very hot water (cooled down slightly from boiling temperature) and keep them there until the water has cooled. This will help your dahlias last for 4-6 days.
Then, re-cut the stems to the desired length to fit your vase and place them in cool water with flower food.
Change the water in your vase daily and keep any leaves or dropped petals out of the water.
