Spring Bulbs FAQ 🌷

Spring Bulbs FAQ 🌷

Which of the bulbs are perennials?

Anemones can be grown as annuals in zones 3–5 and as tender perennials in zone 6–10. You can also dig up your corms at the end of the season when the foliage turns yellow and save them for next year!

Ranunculus can be grown as annuals in zones 3–6 and as tender perennials in zone 7–10. Their corms can also be dug up and stored until next year!

Tulips can be grown in zone 3–10. Many of the hybrid tulips do not naturalize for dependable blooms year after year. Parrot tulips grow best in zones 4–7. Doubles, Singles, and Darwin Hybrid tulips grow in zones 3–7. It may be too warm for tulips in zones 8–10 to re-grow without pre-cooling.

Which flowers have a long bloom time?

Anemones and Ranunculus will bloom for 8-12 weeks! Make sure you keep cutting the flowers or deadheading to encourage new growth. Fall-planted corms bloom in early spring and spring-planted corms will flower by mid-spring and will continue for 6 weeks. The plants will start shutting down once the temperatures reach 75/80F degrees.

Tulips bloom one time. They have a vase life of 7-10 days. The best way to have tulips continuously blooming is to purchase tulips that have different bloom times.

How do I store my bulbs and corms?

Anemones and Ranunculus should be stored dry at room temperature. Set it on a bookshelf in your office/dinning room and remember to get them out when it’s planting time!

Tulips should be stored a bit cooler. You can even tuck them in the fridge - just keep them away from apples!

Can I grow that in my climate?

Anemones can be grown in zones 3-10. Depending on your climate they can be planted either in the fall or early spring. If you are in zone 6-10 you can plant them in the fall. If you are in zone 3-5 plan on planting them in the very early spring. Make sure to cover them up if the temperatures drop below freezing. A row cover or bed sheet should do the trick!

Ranunculus can also be grown in zones 3-10. Depending on your climate they can be planted either in the fall or early spring. If you are in zone 7-10 you can plant them in the fall. If you are in zone 3-6 plan on planting them in the very early spring. Make sure to cover them up if the temperatures drop below freezing. A row cover or bed sheet should do the trick!

Tulips grow best in zone 3-7. But do not worry, if you are in zone 8+ simply place your bulbs in the crisp drawer of your fridge for 8 - 12 weeks (the longer the better) to give them some time to pre-chill before planting them in the ground. Make sure they are not sharing the drawer with any fruit, especially apples!
